Have you noticed among your circle of friends that one is particularly stubborn and determined when they are trying to achieve a goal, or that another of your friends is so thoughtful and calm even when under intense pressure? You might also have noticed that one is always exited and full of life. Well, we are all different. We handle diverse situations differently and approach life from different angles. Wouldn’t life be boring if we were all the same anyway? As Catherine Pulsifer put it, “We are all different, which is great because we are all unique. Without diversity, life would be very boring.”

In this article, I will be describing the four types of temperaments which are, in short, personality types that are used to categorize people. They are melancholic, choleric, sanguine, and phlegmatic. Temperaments are different than personalities, however, in that you are born with the former, but the latter can be adapted and changed throughout your life. I will also look at:

  • How they can be an influence to your career choice?
  • Outline their Strengths and weakness to adapt for an efficient career development and stable working environment.
  1. MELANCHOLY TEMPERAMENT

Melancholies can be somewhat intense. They’re often serious and are very logic-based and detail-oriented. They tend to like plans, routines, and lists. Melancholies feel emotions strongly in a stable way (meaning for a long period of time). They are extremely perfectionistic. They have potential to take criticism too personally, but can also be a bit too critical of themselves and others due to their perfectionism.

Their main strengths at work:

  • They have strong analytical skills and intuition.
  • They are tactful, and you are okay with routine work.
  • Their strong problem-solving skills make them a great adviser.
  • They are wise and creative.
  • They are a classy organizer.

Careers perfect for melancholics: Research, Art, Science, Accounting, Management, Administration, And Social Work.

  1. CHOLERIC TEMPERAMENT

Choleric are definitely intense. They are all about leadership and can have trouble understanding that their way isn’t the best way. This isn’t because they’re necessarily arrogant, but rather that their way just seems so right to them (and often is). They love to save the day. Choleric are extremely stubborn, and when they want to achieve a goal, they absolutely will achieve it, because they’re very task-minded. They can also struggle with criticism.

Their main strengths at work:

  • They are full of energy and have strong leadership skills.
  • They start new projects with passion.
  • They are persuasive and attractive.

Careers perfect for choleric: Business, Law, Technology, Security, Management, Engineering and Statistics.

  1. SANGUINE TEMPEREMENTS

Sanguine are usually quite lively. They love excitement, adventure, and laughter. They can be forgetful with details, as they’re more focused on creativity and the big picture. Many of them are entertainers. Being the center of attention is wonderful to them. Their emotions are strong yet fleeting and constantly fluctuating.

Their main strengths at work:

  • They are self-confident, taking no offense at critical remarks.
  • They have superb interpersonal skills and positive attitude to get on well with peers and clients.
  • They are cool-headed and productive, but you lose motivation and interest in work when it gets intense or doesn’t require any defined responsibilities.

Careers Perfect for Sanguine: Sales, PR, Customer Service, Marketing, Travel, Sports and Entertainment.

  1. PHLEGMATIC TEMPERAMENTS

Phlegmatic are diplomatic to the core. They’re thoughtful, calm, and people-pleasers. Most everyone likes them due to their distaste towards rocking the boat, making them less likely to offend people. They are less prone to things like road rage, as they start speculating about *why* that person might have cut them off. This doesn’t make them perfect however. When they don’t want to do something, they’re quite stubborn and must be calmly encouraged and persuaded, or they could get very frustrated. They’re not usually very fast decision-makers, because they don’t want to make the wrong choice (this aggravates the quick-thinking)

Main strengths at work:

  • Phlegmatic are the most productive employees.
  • When it comes to tough stuff, they are steady and cool-headed.
  • Not so fast at decision-making as choleric, you do stay the course.
  • They are a team players, curious and fair.

Careers Perfect for Phlegmatic: Nursing, Education, Psychology, Office Work, Assistant Roles, Human or Social Services.

Now that you are aware of the temperaments, can you identify where you belong? Can you identify them among your friends or colleagues?
